Agriculture
Abundance of natural resources, coupled with the adoption of advanced agrotechnology, has enabled Shaoxing to be highly developed in the production of grain, cash crops and a number of aquatic products. Its agricultural output value arrived at 7.42 billion yuan in 1999. Shaoxing has more than 20 native produce that are famous in the country. They include tea, peanuts, Chinese torreya, red bayberry and Chinese chestnuts, which are in a leading position either in production quantity or product quality. Shaoxing has built a number of agricultural product trading makets and agricultural enterprises that have stated maketing through Internet. Currently, Over 100 agricultural products are exported to foreign markets with an annual earning of US$260 million. Industry The most influential sectors include: textile industry that mainly provides textile raw materials and fabrics, rice wine industry, electronics industry that mainly produces electronic parts, and pharmaceutical industry that makes new types of antibiotic medicines, traditional Chinese medicine pills and medical apparatus. Other competitive sectors include environment protection equipment, metals and machinery, fine chemicals, silk clothes, furniture and kitchen equipment. The city's industrial output was valued at 39.45 billion yuan in 1999. Currently, the goverments encourage the development of a number of emerging sectors, including information technology, medicine and biology, fine chemicals, new types of building materials and integration of machinery, electronics and instruments. Industrial Output in 1999 Construction Shaoxing has a large number of construction firms that are renowned for
their good design and construction abilities. Of the projects they have
built, 205.5 are of high quality under the evaluation of the Ministry
of Construction, Shanghai Municipal Government and Zhejiang Provincial
Government. Both combined value of project installation and the number
of quality projects rank the first in Zhejiang Province. Of the eight
"construction hometown" named by Zhejiang Provincial Government,
Shaoxing picked up four. Service Industry In the past 10 years, Shaoxing experienced fast growth in commerce, transportation, tourism and real estate sectors. The city's financial and insurance industry is especially competitive since it has 1,113 national, regional and local financial institutions. With outlets in urban and rural areas, they provide services including credits to industrial and commercial enterprises, foreign exchange savings deposits and loans, foreign exchange trading, international settlement, insurance and stock and other securities trading. They offer quality, civilized and prompt services to foreign investors. Industrial Mix in 1999 (Unit:%) External Economy Foreign Investment Foreign investment has kept growing
in Shaoxing in recent years. Currently investors from 48 countries and
regions have invested in the city in 25 sectors, including agriculture,
power, textile, maching-building, electronics, chemicals, medicine, light
industry and building materials. By the end of 1999, a cumulated foreign
investment has arrived at US$850 million, over one-third of which spent
