In 1984 the Standing Committee of the Shaoxing Municipal People's Congress passed a resolution to designate orchid as the city flower. Shaoxing has a very long history in conductiong external trade, which dated back to Han Dynasty(206 BC- AD 220) when chinaware made in Yue Kiln were sold to more than 20 countries, including Japan, Thailand, Egypt and Spain. During Ming and Qing dynasties(1368-1911), locally-made silk, tea and rice wine were popular in Europe, America and Southeast Asia.
