In 1984 the Standing Committee of the Shaoxing Municipal People's Congress passed a resolution to designate orchid as the city flower. Simple-Looking and green all years around, the orchid has been famed as "the sweetest flower in the world", as it defies severe cold and gives out delicate fragrance, it has been a long history since Shaoxing people began to collect and grow orchids. Shaoxing people select orchid as their city flower, for it symbolizes the lofty morality and the down-to-earth spirit.

Shaoxing has a very long history in conductiong external trade, which dated back to Han Dynasty(206 BC- AD 220) when chinaware made in Yue Kiln were sold to more than 20 countries, including Japan, Thailand, Egypt and Spain. During Ming and Qing dynasties(1368-1911), locally-made silk, tea and rice wine were popular in Europe, America and Southeast Asia.
