Public Order

Shaoxing has not only a developed economy but also a simple lifestyle and stable public order. A special "110" telephone hotline is provided to provide prompt assistance in problems concerning public security, municipal management, transportation, industry and commerce, labor, civil affairs, health and power supply.

Jobs and Social Security

There are 69 job agencies in the city. A world Bank project for Shaoxing's vocational training and labour market is being implemented.

Shaoxing has primarily established a unified system of pension and employment security for urban workers. About 95 per cent of State-owned and collective enterprises are covered with the pension insurance system. Retired workers get their pension payment through public organizations, instead of their former employers.

Medicine and Health

The government is making efforts to prevent diseases and accidents. It provides a basic medical assurance through medical insurance. The city has 625 medical institution and 11,000 medical staff provide medical and health services. Major indices of Shaoxing residents' health have arrived at the top of the national level.

Culture and Sports

Shaoxing has been well-known to the world as " a place rich in culture", Yueju Opera, the second largest local opera in China, was originated in Shaoxing. Other local opera forms include Shaoju, Xinchang Diaoqiang, Shaoxing Liahualao. Major cultural facilities include Shaoxing Museum and Shaoxing Library.

Shaoxing has more than 1,700 sport venues, and such games as table tennis, basketball, shadow boxing (Taiqi Quan) and body mechanics have become popular. The city's Sports Centre is a favourite place to host international and national sport events.
