CCIC Annual Conference 2008 to confront the global financial crisis

As the financial turmoil spread over the globe, Beijing saw the coming of the meeting of CCIC Council and the Annual Conference of CCIC 2008. On December 8, the second meeting of the CCIC Council was held and on December 9, the CCIC Annual Conference 2008 was solemnly held. Member enterprises of CCIC gathered to give their own views on the financial crisis and tried to work out countermoves.
At the CCIC Member Enterprises Conference held in the Great Hall of the People on December 24, 2007, Madame Wu Yi, then-vice premier of the State Council, expressed her hope that CCIC would lead its member enterprises to better participate in the international cooperation and competition and to play a new role at the international economic and trade stage.

During the past year, CCIC has expanded its influence, enlarged its member enterprises and covered a wider range of industries. Its member enterprises include not only large state-owned enterprises having great impact on national strength and people’s livelihood, but also joint stock enterprises, private enterprises and foreign-invested enterprise in other economic fields. Not only almost all of the large banking enterprises but also important enterprises in the petroleum, petrochemical and automobile industry find themselves members of CCIC.

Besides member enterprises, representatives also attending the CCIC annual conference were officials and scholars from the National Development & Reform Commission, the Development Research Center of the State Council as well as representatives from the local business associations. Over ten embassies and foreign business associations send their representatives to the conference. Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce People’s Republic of China specially attended the conference and delivered a speech.

President Wan Jifei delivered a speech at the annual conference, pointing out the current situation pose both a challenge and an opportunity to China. He called on the Chinese enterprises to seize the opportunity with unique view and creative thinking and to grab in advance the opportunity for next round economic development.

The conference was hosted by Mr. Zhang Wei, Vice President of CCIC. Centering on the theme of Crisis, Confidence, Action, delegates conducted deep-going analysis of the impact the global financial crisis has on China’s economy.

The financial group and the economic group further discussed current situation and difficulties they had in their own industries and deliberated over countermeasures and plans for the future in the parallel sessions.

Delegates all agreed on that the central government’s ten measures for enlarging domestic demand and promoting economic growth and nine measures for finance to promote economy would help China overcome the current difficulties and maintain long-term development. They all believed that given the powerful support of the Party and the central government, the Chinese business community would have enhanced confidence to fight the crisis with united strength and vigorous actions and to embrace a bright tomorrow.
